atarme al mástil
pero
deseando que el viento lo voltee
que la sirena suba y con los dientes
corte las cuerdas y me arrastre al fondo
diciendo no no no
pero siguiéndola.

that the siren comes up and with her teeth
cuts the ropes and drags me to the bottom
saying no no no
but following her.

wensen dat de wind hem breekt
dat de sirene aan boord komt en met haar tanden
de koorden doorsnijdt en mij meesleurt naar de bodem

Idea Vilariño, (Montevideo, 1920-) is a poet, literary critic, translator and composer of songs. She started writing at the age of seventeen and published La suplicante, her first collection of poetry in 1945 of which the sensual and lucid poems surprised the critics. Her authentic lyric contributed to a decisive chance in Uruguayan poetry leading to modern poetry in the country. She had contacts with famous modern poets, such as Juan Ramón Jiménez, Pablo Neruda, Borges and Pedro Salinas. In 1947 appeared Cielo cielo, her second collection of poetry, followed in 195 by Por aire sucio. Nocturnos, published in 1955, confirms her superior poetic voice. Other splendid books will follow: Pobre mundo, No, Poemas de amor. Vuelo ciego, published in 2004 by Visor offers the reader not only a large selection of her delicate poems, but also a most interesting introduction by Rosario Peyrou who edited the book. Her complete poetic oeuvre has recently been published by Editorial Cal y Canto, Montevideo, Uruguay. Great poetry!
